The UST Asian Studies Society (or ASSOC) is the official academic organization of the Asian Studies students of the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the University of Santo Tomas. As a self-run academic organization, ASSOC officially represents Asian Studies students in academic, campus, and extra-curricular affairs that may affect the students during their 4-year stay at the University.
The Society also serves as the official organizer of student-focused events and guilds for the student body. Events such as UST Model United Nations and UST Model ASEAN Meeting are annual projects organized by Asian Studies students open to the public. The society also organizes 7 interest-based guilds that each Asian Studies student can join based on their interests and hobbies.
The logo and seal of the Asian Studies Society is represented by a black background bordered by a golden-yellow rounded rectangle with a silver Dominican cross which symbolizes the unity of the University of Santo Tomas as Royal and Pontifical University. The cross contains the face of the Greek Goddess Athena, the mascot of the Faculty, which symbolizes the Faculty of Arts and Letters' quest for wisdom.
The logo has a saber on the upper-left quadrant that symbolizes courage, a dragon on the upper-right quadrant that symbolizes power and excellence, a lotus on the lower-left quadrant which symbolizes purity and a spontaneous generation, and a bundle of rice on the lower-right quadrant that symbolizes the primary agricultural industry of the Asian Countries.
The Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies at the University of Santo Tomas was offered in 1951 under the Faculty of Arts and Letters. The program was developed through the leadership of Fr. Frederik Fermin, O.P. (1924 – 2014) and Prof. Magdalena Alonso-Villaba, Ph.D. (1928 – 2023), who helped shape the direction of the program during its early years.
The UST Asian Studies Society was established in 1977 as the official academic organization of the AB Asian Studies program. It is composed of seven board committees, each led by their respective Executive Board members, namely: the President, Vice President for External Affairs, Vice President for Internal Affairs, Secretary, Treasurer, Auditor, and Public Relations Officer (PRO).
